Childhood is full of learning by observation and exploration. Whenever something new is told to children, you will be bombarded by a long list of questions related to that topic. In the same manner informing the ill effects of drugs to children can be a daunting task. Their confusion starts with the question ‘why do we have drugs at home when it causes so many ill effects?’

When to Educate?
The average age when kids become curious about drugs and alcohol is found to be between 10 and 12. Thus, it becomes the duty of the parents to pass on first hand and correct information to their wards about the drug and alcohol abuse and their consequences. When they get information from unreliable sources, they become more curious and might try it.

Educate by Role Play
Role play is a nice thing which almost all children would love to do. You have to plan role plays where you tell them about the ill effects of the drugs and alcohol. You also educate them to say ‘no’ to drugs when there is peer pressure and to discriminate between good and bad friends.

Teach them to Decide
Decision making is one of the skills that need to be developed by providing the child with ample opportunities. Teach and encourage them to analyze facts in any issue they face and choose the better available option. This way you can assist them in deciding a drug free life.

Relevant Information
In a playful, way you can educate your children that drugs are harmful when taken in an inappropriate manner and time. You can tell the fact that drugs have to be taken only in certain amounts for certain specific period as prescribed by a doctor as otherwise drugs do harm to bodies instead of doing good.

Follow your Footsteps
Children generally observe their parents in order to follow them. After educating about the ill effects of drugs and alcohol, it becomes meaningless when you yourself go for a drink after a tiring day. Hence, you must follow your teachings first of all.
