Drug addiction is a very serious matter. But when it comes to our friends, family, and co-workers, being able to recognize the signs of addiction can actually be life saving. Drugs can destroy lives, so if you suspect someone close to you has an addiction, it’s time to suggest help. Below are signs for recognizing drug addiction.

1. Mood swings. If your loved one is suddenly acting uncharactiscally moody or temperamental, this could be a sign of addiction. Drugs can often change a person’s temperament.

2. Unable to meet responsibilities. If a person is missing work, school, or not helping out at home, this is a sign of addiction. The drug takes top priority in the addict’s life.

3. There’s legal trouble. Drugs can often get the addict into legal trouble, whether it’s buying and selling, or simply using drugs and then getting into trouble. Any sign of a person suddenly getting into legal trouble is when it’s time to take action.

4. Ignoring dangerous symptoms. If your loved one continues to abuse drugs, even when he knows the dangers, there is a problem. This is a sure sign of addiction because the addict doesn’t care about himself or others around them when it comes to safety.

5. Problems with relationships. Often, a drug addict will begin to withdraw from friends and family. If you’re noticing a sudden urge to be alone or to ignore friends, this is a sign of addiction.

If you recognize any of these signs, get help immediately! Now is not the time to be fooled into thinking there isn’t a problem.

It is hard to imagine a world without technology. In fact, one could argue that technological advances define historic periods. The Gutenberg Press brought about the Renaissance, the steam engine defined the industrial revolution and now the Internet will define what many call the information revolution.

As with these historic accomplishments, every advancement of technology was developed to improve the quality of life. Technology makes our lives easier and safer.

The cell phone made communication easier, the seat belt made transportation safer and now electric cigarettes have been developed in an effort to improve the lives of those who smoke and those who associate with them.

Electric cigarettes are devices that deliver small doses of nicotine through a small tube. Several manufacturers have designed electric cigarettes to resemble actual cigarettes. It is used just like any other cigarette except there is no smoke released by the device conquering the number one concern of non-smokers: second hand smoke.

A smoker simply buys a kit, which includes a rechargeable battery, and a container that holds liquid nicotine. Users inhale the solution that is vaporized in the tube. Users can then purchase refills as needed. This can translate into great savings depending on use.

Cost savings pale in comparison to the potential health benefits from the use of an electric cigarette as opposed to a traditional one. The electric cigarette eliminates the carcinogens inhaled in tobacco-based cigarettes, drastically reducing the likelihood of getting lung cancer – the number one cause of death amongst smokers. A greater cost savings is obtained if you take into consideration these possible health care costs usually associated with smokers such as higher health insurance premiums.

Of course many will also use this technology to help overcome addiction to cigarettes, providing a new strategy towards quitting.

Drug Abuse Misinformation

Often, drug abuse is thought of as using illegally gained drugs for purposes that are harmful or dangerous to a person’s body. Images of dark street corners and shady looking characters are what people often think of when they hear the term drug abuse. However, drug abuse is very common in many circles, including among wealthy business individuals. Having a well-balanced approach to health care administration can help patients avoid drug abuse and seek treatment plans that are specifically designed for their bodies.

The Purpose of Prescription Medications

Doctors prescribe drugs for patients who need help dealing with physical ailments, including pain or depression. With a doctor’s proper care and supervision, patients can enjoy their lives free from any challenges that are present. Doctors are able to properly diagnose and prescribe medications. They take into account the patient’s medical history, previous illnesses, and reactions, and they know what the desired and expected effect should be.

Patient/Doctor Plans for Success

The success of patients using prescription medicines for their illnesses is relative to how and why they are able to avoid drug abuse encounters. Medical professionals give prescribed medicines in controlled dosages and closely monitored the patients for reactions. With a customized medical approach per patient, the patient doesn’t have to, and in many cases need to, use the medication for the ailment past the necessary amount of time. If patients feel as though they may still need the drug to function, their physician may prescribe the drug again and monitor the process. Sometimes, doctors will offer another type of medication to answer any new illness.

With a team approach effort to managing a patient’s health, doctors and patients find workable approaches to long-term health care. In this type of situation, it’s safe to incorporate prescription drugs into treatment plans.

Alcohol dependency is a debilitating condition and anyone who has become dependent on alcohol may need professional help to quit. In serious cases, a doctor may prescribe a strong Alcohol Treatment to assist. The medication is not a magic or instant cure, merely a tool to aid the alcoholic. Studies conclude that it is extremely difficult for an alcoholic to give up drinking. When you or a family member are ready, here are a few simple strategies to stop drinking.

Get Help – Join a treatment program for alcohol rehabilitation or a support group and ask for help. Statistics show that addicts help each other. Family and friends will also want to help you to reach your goal, so build on those relationships.

Keep a Diary – A diary helps you to evaluate your progress. Write down realistic goals to aim for. Track the number of drinks you consume and regularly review your progress.

Remove Alcohol – It is best not to have alcohol around. The temptation is too easy to succumb to for an alcoholic. Mark your bottles so that you can track the alcohol level.

Slow Down – When drinking, taste each sip and focus on the taste, rather than swallowing quickly. Alternate between alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks. Drink a glass of water for every drink you consume.

Avoid Temptation – What are your ‘high risk’ circumstances? Avoid and change those situations at all costs.

Exercise - Exercise is a great form of dealing with anxiety. Join a gym, yoga class, running group or whatever appeals to you.

Reward Yourself – When you achieve a goal regarding cutting down, no matter how small, reward yourself with your favorite food or go to a movie.

Persevere – When you fail, don’t give up. Start again. Giving up alcohol is a process. Keep at your goal and aim for recovery over the long-view.

Prescription drug abuse has become quite common among drug addicts who cannot lay their hands on narcotic drugs. Prescription drug abuse refers to the use of prescribed drugs for a purpose not recommended or prescribed for by the physician. Though the drug is prescribed, since it is used for different purpose, this is also illegal like that of drug abuse.

Reason for Abuse of Prescription Drugs
•	Some drugs like ADHD expedite weight loss. As this fact is well known, many people who are crazy about reducing their body weight try this drug for their weight loss programs. People abuse prescription drugs for various other effects like ecstasy, weight loss, and fun, fit in, performance enhancement, effective studying and more.
•	People take these drugs considering that these have been prescribed by doctors and hence are less dangerous and addictive. But in reality, prescription drugs can be safer only for those individuals with a certain specific medical ailment or condition.
•	Other people take prescription drugs as they are of opinion that it is not illegal. But they should be aware of the fact that sharing with others prescription or taking drugs without doctor’s prescription is also illegal.

Current Scenario
As per the 2009 survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is a rise in the abuse of prescription drugs. Almost 20 percent of teens who have tried prescription drugs without doctor’s prescription. Even National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) has reported increase in prescription drug abuse in the US. Police department and law enforcement authorities like Drugs Enforcement Administration (DEA) in all states are taking stringent action against the sales of such pills.

PDMP
Prescription Drug Monitoring Program is a statewide electronic database management system that has been incorporated by DEA in order to keep track of sales of prescription drugs. Thus, DEA tries to identify and prevent abuse of prescription drugs. It also helps them to educate public about the prescription drug abuse and diversion of addiction from prescription drug abuse.

Addiction can be a devastating experience, not only for the one who is addicted, but for those friends, family, and loved ones who are close to the addict. Typically, the relationships with these people tend to diminish in importance for the addict, and loved ones are forced to watch the addict spiral deeper and deeper into a web of lies, detachment, and self destructive behavior. When you see this happening, you may wonder what you can do, how you can help. Addicts often feel attacked when you try to intervene on their behalf. They may distance themselves from you, or worse, use you for money or a way to get drugs.

The person you knew and loved has been replaced by someone who does not think clearly, or think of anything at all except how to get the next fix. There are so many frustrations that occur when dealing with these individuals. Many find that they simply can’t deal with all the problems of the addict on their own. Sometimes, one of the best ways to help is by checking the addict into one of the many inpatient drug alcohol treatment centers in the U.S. There are many, so you’ll need to do some research. You may find that one of these centers is just what your friend or relative needs to help get his or her life turned around. The watchful care of trained professionals who have resources and science to back them up can be a real boon to both you and your addicted loved one. The centers can provide the structure and environment necessary to help users get clean and stop the downward spiral. Once your loved one has hit rock bottom, he or she is ready for help, and you can begin the process by getting that person checked into a center where professional help is readily available.
