Rehab wasn’t a pleasant time for you. There were lots of obstacles and issues that you faced. You have been counting the days until they let you out and allowed you to get back to your own life at home. You were excited about getting home and being around the love and support of family and friends. This was supposed to be the next great phase of your life and you couldn’t wait but then something very serious occurred. You realized very quickly that you weren’t the only one interested in making decisions on the rest of your life.

You have now encountered a family member that things they know what’s best for you and aren’t afraid to tell you all about it. They are ready to make you better even if you have no desire to have their help. So the real issue is how do you deal with them and why are they doing this to you?

The truth is that they just care about you and want to see you get better. You can be mad at them but only a little bit. After all, had you been making good decisions the entire time you would have never been in the position you are in. This isn’t a blame game or about making you feel bad they just don’t want you to have to deal with making the same mistake again.

The best thing you can do is to tell them that while you love them and appreciate their health you cannot continue to let them call the shots. You would love to bounce the occasional life decision off them and let them know when you are looking for help but otherwise you have a life to lead and the best thing you can do is to lead it by yourself.

When some patients find that outpatient programs are not sufficient enough to support their extensive physical and emotional needs during rehabilitation treatment, many find residential programs to help much more.

Inpatient programs are offered in a range of venues, from remote locations, like camps and wilderness programs, to private, resort style clinics. There are also many physical rehab programs attached to area hospitals for those struggling with drug addition. This allows the resident to access quick medical attention if necessary. Being in close proximity to medical care facilities also gives the family of the patient peace of mind in knowing that their treatment is closely guarded.

Some inpatient rehab programs last as little as 28 days and some go on for as long as 12 months. The length of the program is determined by the patient’s problem and its severity and is further determined by the attending physician. These programs typically consist of very structured daily activities. Usually, the first step in treatment at the clinic will be supervised detox. Other forms of structured treatments will follow, such as group therapy sessions and personalized exploration.

Many addicts find that entering a residential drug abuse program alleviates the pressures they feel in their everyday lives in the outside world. This allows the patient to focus on recovering without the added stress from relationships, family, friends, and work. The structured parts of rehabs are also found constructive in creating long-term success for patients, helping them learn to cope with stress and pressure without the use of drugs.

If you’ve been a user of drugs and/or alcohol, it’s possible that you’ll have some permanent impairment. It’s also possible that you can pass these impairment problems on to your children if you didn’t stay clean while you were pregnant. Because of that, it’s very important that you check yourself into drug rehab at the first sign of a problem. Keep in mind, too, that what you think is a problem might be skewed by your abuse. Your friends and family members who are clean and sober can often be the ones to tell you if they see a problem with the way you’re living your life.

If you’re pregnant or plan to get pregnant, drug rehab is even more crucial. The sooner you get clean and sober, the safer your baby will be and the higher the chance he or she won’t be born with any serious impairments. Babies that are born addicted to illegal substances – or even alcohol – often struggle to meet milestones that most babies have no problem with. They can end up falling behind in school and in life. Of course, a mental impairment can happen to any child, but the ones that occur in babies whose mothers are addicts can often be prevented.

Even if you don’t think you can get clean, or you don’t really want to, do it for the sake of your child. That tiny life shouldn’t have to come into the world already addicted to something that’s terribly unhealthy and facing a lifetime of problems because of it. By making the right choices for your baby, you’ll be making good choices for the rest of your life, too. Even if you plan to give the child up for adoption, giving him or her a good start is the right thing to do.

It is hard to imagine a world without technology. In fact, one could argue that technological advances define historic periods. The Gutenberg Press brought about the Renaissance, the steam engine defined the industrial revolution and now the Internet will define what many call the information revolution.

As with these historic accomplishments, every advancement of technology was developed to improve the quality of life. Technology makes our lives easier and safer.

The cell phone made communication easier, the seat belt made transportation safer and now electric cigarettes have been developed in an effort to improve the lives of those who smoke and those who associate with them.

Electric cigarettes are devices that deliver small doses of nicotine through a small tube. Several manufacturers have designed electric cigarettes to resemble actual cigarettes. It is used just like any other cigarette except there is no smoke released by the device conquering the number one concern of non-smokers: second hand smoke.

A smoker simply buys a kit, which includes a rechargeable battery, and a container that holds liquid nicotine. Users inhale the solution that is vaporized in the tube. Users can then purchase refills as needed. This can translate into great savings depending on use.

Cost savings pale in comparison to the potential health benefits from the use of an electric cigarette as opposed to a traditional one. The electric cigarette eliminates the carcinogens inhaled in tobacco-based cigarettes, drastically reducing the likelihood of getting lung cancer – the number one cause of death amongst smokers. A greater cost savings is obtained if you take into consideration these possible health care costs usually associated with smokers such as higher health insurance premiums.

Of course many will also use this technology to help overcome addiction to cigarettes, providing a new strategy towards quitting.

Substance abuse is a serious problem that is plaguing our country. Unfortunately it has become all too easy for people to develop an alcoholism problem or a drug addiction, because drugs, alcohol and other addictive substances are readily available on our city streets. There is only one real solution when it comes to a substance abuse issue, and that is alcohol rehab or drug rehab depending on your particular affliction. No one is immune to the effects of drug addiction or alcohol addiction, especially when you consider the physical impact that a drug can have on your body.

There are a wide variety of different circumstances in the world that bring people to a drug or alcohol addiction. You probably started using your drug of choice socially, just to feel a buzz and get high with friends. Maybe you drank socially, or drank to dull the pain and stress of a troubled life. The little bit you had at first slowly stopped being enough, and you had to try more and more to get the same effect. Little did you know, the drug was gaining a hold over you, causing physical and emotional dependency as a result.

If you have a substance abuse problem, there is help out there. The most important thing that you can do is make a commitment to your own health and well being by reaching out to a drug or alcohol rehab facility today. Trained support staff can help you overcome your addiction, but only if and when you are willing to kick the habit yourself, because you cannot overcome your addiction unless it is you that really wants to make that change.

Once you are ready to overcome your substance abuse problem, contact a substance abuse hotline or center in your area to find out more about how you can get the help that you need.

Many professionals in the field of substance abuse treatment agree that the primary cause of addiction is negative and unregulated emotions. Feelings of despair and hopelessness often characterized alongside depression cause addicts to continue to use harmful substances. Negative emotions and the situations that give rise to them inevitably cause individuals to seek relief. Emotions that are not dealt with in healthy ways cause anxiety. For an addict, relief from their negative emotions and anxiety comes in the form of substance abuse. Learning to regulate emotions may be the key many addicts need to get clean and sober.
Emotion regulation is the ability to control and regulate one’s emotions. All functioning adults are naturally capable of emotion regulation to some degree. Some people are more adept at this than others, and those of us who are prone to addiction often have a low propensity towards emotion regulation. There are a wide range of possible psychological explanations for this. The mental factors causing a failure to self-regulate emotions will vary from person to person.
For the purpose of fighting drug and alcohol addiction, analyzing emotions and learning to better regulate them is imperative. In fact, this is one of the most important goals of drug treatment therapy. If negative emotions trigger drug use in an addict, then learning to control negative emotions can help inhibit the urges towards substance abuse. Therapists attempt to teach emotion regulation using a variety of methods. Generally, persons lacking the natural ability to self regulate emotions have carried this difficulty since childhood. This does not mean that the ability cannot be learned; just that it can be more difficult for some to master it. The key is to understand what events or situations precede and prompt specific emotions, and then learn to interpret those events differently before negative emotions can arise. Learning to deal with negative emotions in healthy ways and learning to build and nurture positive emotions can go a long way toward fighting drug abuse.

The term dual diagnosis is used to describe the very common situation in which a person who suffers from a substance abuse problem can also be diagnosed with a specific mental disorder. This situation is well documented and may even affect a majority of drug addicts, although many people suffering from dual diagnosis have not formally been diagnosed with a disease. This is simply because so many mental disorders go undiagnosed, which does not make them any less real.
For an addict, suffering from a mental disorder inevitably makes the addiction much more severe. Even a mild mental disorder can impede the process of quitting and exacerbate the addiction. The most common mental illness, both diagnosed and undiagnosed, is depression. Feelings of depression and hopelessness represent the largest impediment to quitting for any addict; you can only imagine how difficult this can be for a clinically depressed person.
Dual diagnosis is a general idea and most doctors and counselors prefer to approach the addiction problem before worrying about other possible disorders. This is because substance abuse often causes psychological symptoms that mimic mental disorders, making it difficult to diagnose pre-existing conditions.
Dual Diagnosis is understandably common. It is no secret that mental disorders and substance abuse go hand in hand. This may be because mental disorders predispose a person to begin using drugs. This is known as self-medicating, and is a prevalent cause of drug and alcohol addiction. Another reason dual diagnosis is so common may be that long term substance abuse can actually cause mental disorders and psychosis that would not have otherwise occurred.
Treating individuals with dual diagnosis can be very difficult. Many rehabilitation and addiction treatment facilities will not accept patients with dual diagnosis because they are not staffed with professionals who specialize in mental disorders outside of addiction. Whatever the course of treatment for these individuals, it is important to treat both the addiction and the mental illness in order to maximize the possibility of success.

One of the factors behind motivating or inducing an individual to take to drug is the peer pressure. Thus, it becomes essential for an individual to learn to say no to drugs or alcohol when they are pressurized by their peer group.

Learn About the Ill Effects

You could have heard many lectures about the ill effects of the drug and alcohol abuse. But learn them by yourself once again and be aware of the negative consequences arising out of these addictions. You should be able to remind yourself of these consequences when you are pressurized.

Your Ambition

There is a goal and ambition in everybody’s life that makes living meaningful. Think what would happen to the path leading to your goal when you take drugs or alcohol and get strong nerve to say no as your ambitions and goals get shattered.

No Magic

Everybody in this world has one or the other problem. You must realize this and try to figure out the solutions for your problems in a logical way instead of expecting a magical solution. Realize this fact and do not take your problems as an excuse to take to drug or alcohols.

Involve Yourself

When you find that you are depressed due to the happenings around you, divert your mind from drugs or alcohol by involving yourself in a more constructive activity. Learn to enjoy your life as it is and take pleasure even in the smallest things instead of complaining.

Select Friends

A good friend is one who makes it a pleasure to spend time with. Their interests and pastime should match our wavelength of thinking. Learn to discriminate between good and bad friends and avoid the bad ones.

Seek for Help

If you find yourself too pressurized and not able to say no to drugs or alcohol, take the support of a professional counselor or a reliable friend or a relative. With their support you should get the nerve to say no to drugs and alcohol.

Just like automotive insurance, you have to know going into the policy that there are ways to cut back on costs. Sometimes this means getting a car alarm installed or getting accurately reported mileage to and from work to the dealer. You know that getting caught driving under the influence of drugs or having a substance abuse problem will not get you the lower rate you need. There is no way of knowing just how much money you could save if you approached the situation in a different way and looked at your policy closely to cut the bottom line.

Well the same can easily be said of your health insurance and your cost for prescription drugs. There is no question that the cost for these life saving services and medication are astronomical but that doesn’t mean you have to subject yourself to the worst possible cost. Again, you will need to steer clear of drugs and any other substance that you could abuse so that you can get the best rate. There are ways for you to get the proper top of the line care you need without breaking the bank to make it happen.

Most of you are operating within a PPO which means that you have the freedom to choose whatever doctor you want without needing a referral like HMO’s require of you. This also gives you the freedom to choose a hospital that is in your network, which would save you a considerable amount of money.

For instance, if you are seriously injured in a car accident and months later you have to have a surgery done to repair damage done to your wrist, if you decide to go with an out of network hospital you usually have to pay about 30% of the cost of the procedure up to a certain dollar amount. However, if you choose an in-network hospital, you may only have to pay 10% of the cost, making it a much better deal for you and this should give you a lot of relief. Combine that with the fact that all insurance money is tax deductible and you could be feeling really good about your PPO.

Childhood is full of learning by observation and exploration. Whenever something new is told to children, you will be bombarded by a long list of questions related to that topic. In the same manner informing the ill effects of drugs to children can be a daunting task. Their confusion starts with the question ‘why do we have drugs at home when it causes so many ill effects?’

When to Educate?
The average age when kids become curious about drugs and alcohol is found to be between 10 and 12. Thus, it becomes the duty of the parents to pass on first hand and correct information to their wards about the drug and alcohol abuse and their consequences. When they get information from unreliable sources, they become more curious and might try it.

Educate by Role Play
Role play is a nice thing which almost all children would love to do. You have to plan role plays where you tell them about the ill effects of the drugs and alcohol. You also educate them to say ‘no’ to drugs when there is peer pressure and to discriminate between good and bad friends.

Teach them to Decide
Decision making is one of the skills that need to be developed by providing the child with ample opportunities. Teach and encourage them to analyze facts in any issue they face and choose the better available option. This way you can assist them in deciding a drug free life.

Relevant Information
In a playful, way you can educate your children that drugs are harmful when taken in an inappropriate manner and time. You can tell the fact that drugs have to be taken only in certain amounts for certain specific period as prescribed by a doctor as otherwise drugs do harm to bodies instead of doing good.

Follow your Footsteps
Children generally observe their parents in order to follow them. After educating about the ill effects of drugs and alcohol, it becomes meaningless when you yourself go for a drink after a tiring day. Hence, you must follow your teachings first of all.

Drug addiction is a dangerous and derogatory condition that needs to be kicked off. You need intense strength and will to overcome the drug addiction. The thought of kicking is itself the first step to overcome addiction. Though overcoming drug addiction is difficult, it is worth going through as once you overcome, you can live a better and normal life.

Steps to Overcome Drug Addiction
•	Step 1 – Deciding to overcome the addiction has to be taken after preparing yourself for the long duration of the treatment. You should be determined to be committed to your decision.
•	Step 2 –Choosing a treatment option from the innumerable options available can actually be daunting task. But choose the one that is customized to your individual needs and is realistic. Also find out various organizations that lend a helping hand to you to overcome this habit.
•	Step 3 – Get the support of your family and friends as it will become too difficult without their support. Make social contacts that do not take you again to drugs and involve yourself in some constructive activities. Live in a sober home during drug addiction treatment so that you can manage your craving for the drugs.
•	Step 4 – Stress, anxiety and negative thoughts that were suppressed by the use of drugs will resurface again. This can trigger you to take to drugs once again. Hence, learn to get over these thoughts with the help of your support team. Try to calm down yourself by engaging yourself in some meaningful activity.
•	Step 5 – Check the drug cravings by not meeting the old drug buddies, avoiding clubs and bars which can remind you of the drug abuse. Do exercise or inculcate an absorbing interest or a hobby to keep you busy to fight the cravings.
•	Step 6 – Be determined to continue with recovery plan even after treatment. Get into some community service or set a goal for yourself so that your determination and concentration will be focused on them instead of going back to drugs.

Drug addiction comes out of prolonged abuse of prescription drugs, over-the counter drugs or illicit narcotics. As the chemical substances in drugs affect and interrupt the normal functioning of the central nervous system, many physical and mental complications keep arising. Hence, it becomes very crucial to lend a helping hand to an addict to kick that habit as soon as you realize it.

Addiction Treatment Programs

As the chemicals in the abused drugs directly act on the brain and its functioning, addiction is actually termed as a brain disease. Brain gets adjusted to the influx of these chemicals and their effects in due course of time and hence it is not possible for a drug abuser to stop taking drugs abruptly. So it becomes necessary to take the help of a professional in order to tackle the problem and come out of addiction.

Selecting a Good Rehab Program

There are many rehabilitation centers available. Thus, it is important to select the right one for your near and dear one. Enquire or browse through internet to find the method and treatments followed by the center and select a reliable center to admit the addict.

Convince for Treatment

Rehabilitation treatment is generally done in-house for few days depending on the severity. After discharge, the person has to continue with the recovery treatment for a prescribed time in sincere manner. So it is extremely crucial to first talk, counsel and get the consent of the addict to get rehabilitation treatment at the first hand. You should be able to educate the addict of the ill-effects of the drug addiction and convince for the treatment.

Mental Support

Drug addiction often is accompanied with social stigma. Society in general looks down upon a rehabilitated drug addict as a normal person. The treatment given to them may prove futile when they are constantly confronted by societal stigma and they can again resort to taking drugs. You have to be there with them to give the mental support to overcome these issues and increase their confidence to live their life.

Dependence of an individual on medicinal or non-medicinal drugs is referred to as drug addiction. Though a drug addict wants to overcome the addiction due to the social stigma and medical complications attached to it; they usually find it difficult to beat the habit. If you are such an addict or know someone who has fallen victim to drug addiction, you should approach and get professional help in tackling this critical issue. Drug addicts cannot stop taking drugs abruptly as brain cells cannot accommodate themselves to the sudden chemical changes. Hence, professional intervention is must.

Importance of Rehabilitation

There is an increased prevalence of addiction to prescription drugs and painkillers in modern America and through out the world. Every day thousands of individuals are becoming victims of drug abuse due to one reason or the other. Thus, to lend a helping hand to drug addicts, it becomes necessary to have residential drug abuse program to bring back their lives out of their illusionary shells.
Though people take to drug abuse because of the euphoric effect they get, many physical and psychological problems are intertwined in the drug addicts due to their abuse. Instead of letting their lives dwindle in this turmoil, rehabilitation program assist these addicts to kick off their dangerous and derogatory habit.

Working of Rehabilitation Programs

Rehabilitation program initially studies the history of the addict in order to assess the reason for addiction. Physical, psychological, family and social problems of that particular addict are studied to devise a treatment plan for that individual. Addicts are given in-house treatment for a period and then discharged with an assurance of following the plan of recovery procedures.

Final word

Though it is difficult to shake the habit of drug abuse, you should be optimistic about the positive effects you can see after rehabilitation. Life of the rehabilitated drug addicts become worth living once again. Rehabilitation must be the most important thing you must do for yourself or your near and dear ones as soon as you identify the addiction.

Alcohol dependency is a debilitating condition and anyone who has become dependent on alcohol may need professional help to quit. In serious cases, a doctor may prescribe a strong Alcohol Treatment to assist. The medication is not a magic or instant cure, merely a tool to aid the alcoholic. Studies conclude that it is extremely difficult for an alcoholic to give up drinking. When you or a family member are ready, here are a few simple strategies to stop drinking.

Get Help – Join a treatment program for alcohol rehabilitation or a support group and ask for help. Statistics show that addicts help each other. Family and friends will also want to help you to reach your goal, so build on those relationships.

Keep a Diary – A diary helps you to evaluate your progress. Write down realistic goals to aim for. Track the number of drinks you consume and regularly review your progress.

Remove Alcohol – It is best not to have alcohol around. The temptation is too easy to succumb to for an alcoholic. Mark your bottles so that you can track the alcohol level.

Slow Down – When drinking, taste each sip and focus on the taste, rather than swallowing quickly. Alternate between alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks. Drink a glass of water for every drink you consume.

Avoid Temptation – What are your ‘high risk’ circumstances? Avoid and change those situations at all costs.

Exercise - Exercise is a great form of dealing with anxiety. Join a gym, yoga class, running group or whatever appeals to you.

Reward Yourself – When you achieve a goal regarding cutting down, no matter how small, reward yourself with your favorite food or go to a movie.

Persevere – When you fail, don’t give up. Start again. Giving up alcohol is a process. Keep at your goal and aim for recovery over the long-view.

Prescription drug abuse has become quite common among drug addicts who cannot lay their hands on narcotic drugs. Prescription drug abuse refers to the use of prescribed drugs for a purpose not recommended or prescribed for by the physician. Though the drug is prescribed, since it is used for different purpose, this is also illegal like that of drug abuse.

Reason for Abuse of Prescription Drugs
•	Some drugs like ADHD expedite weight loss. As this fact is well known, many people who are crazy about reducing their body weight try this drug for their weight loss programs. People abuse prescription drugs for various other effects like ecstasy, weight loss, and fun, fit in, performance enhancement, effective studying and more.
•	People take these drugs considering that these have been prescribed by doctors and hence are less dangerous and addictive. But in reality, prescription drugs can be safer only for those individuals with a certain specific medical ailment or condition.
•	Other people take prescription drugs as they are of opinion that it is not illegal. But they should be aware of the fact that sharing with others prescription or taking drugs without doctor’s prescription is also illegal.

Current Scenario
As per the 2009 survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is a rise in the abuse of prescription drugs. Almost 20 percent of teens who have tried prescription drugs without doctor’s prescription. Even National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) has reported increase in prescription drug abuse in the US. Police department and law enforcement authorities like Drugs Enforcement Administration (DEA) in all states are taking stringent action against the sales of such pills.

PDMP
Prescription Drug Monitoring Program is a statewide electronic database management system that has been incorporated by DEA in order to keep track of sales of prescription drugs. Thus, DEA tries to identify and prevent abuse of prescription drugs. It also helps them to educate public about the prescription drug abuse and diversion of addiction from prescription drug abuse.

There are all kinds of ways to keep your health in check and make sure that you’re staying on the right track with your fitness goals. When you’re interested in taking care of your health and tracking how you’re doing, a finger pulse oximeter can be one of the ways to do that. It can allow you to see how fast your heart’s beating during rest and during exertion, as well as how much oxygen you’re getting. Whether you have a health condition that needs monitoring or you just want to know the information for your exercise program, simple devices can help you.

It’s one of the simplest devices, and least expensive, that you can use when it comes to health medicine, but there are plenty of other monitoring devices that you can also use. Don’t overlook the fact that simple things can provide much of what you need to know. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on something that might do much more than you really need, just use the simpler devices like blood pressure monitors and heart rate monitors, for example, to track your basic information. Your doctor can tell you if you need more than that on a day-to-day basis.

You want to get a good deal on any of the medical supplies you buy, too. That way you can save money for something else and can feel better about your purchases. Just make sure you get medical devices that are good quality and that you can rely on. When it comes to medical information, it’s very important that you get something that’s trustworthy. That’s especially true if you’re judging some of your safety and security off it. Don’t buy something that’s too cheap and end up regretting it later. Shop for the best deal – which is the highest quality at the lowest price.

Lung cancer is one of the deadliest diseases known to mankind. As no medicine has been found to cure this disease, any positive finding that reduces its risk is a reason to celebrate. However, if you think popping handful of vitamins will prevent you from being affected by lung cancer then you are wrong. But what this conveys is that people who have high levels of vitamin B6 in their bodies, have 50 percent less chances of developing lung cancer in comparison with people who have lower levels of vitamin B6.

Nathan Seppa in Science News confirmed the findings through a research conducted by an international team. In a similar study it was also found that people with high levels of amino acids had only half the risk of being affected by lung cancer when compared to those who had lower levels of amino acid. It was also said that having high levels of amino acids, Vitamin B6 and folate reduced the lung cancer risk by two-thirds.

A lot of facts about this study still remain unknown. Whether or not vitamin B6 offers protection against lung cancer for smokers is yet to be determined. So is the truth about whether Vitamin B6 from supplements or vitamin B6 from rich diet is more effective.
Another study conducted reveals that high levels of Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12 and folate offer protection against lung cancer.

One of the best ways to stay away from lung cancer is to take the necessary steps to prevent its occurrence. If you are a heavy smoker, think whether the habit is worth losing your life to a deadly disease. If you have recently quit smoking, get yourself checked for lung cancer and take the necessary steps to improve the quality of your life.
